So, I've noticed that discrimination is alive and kicking in all area's, even the places I thought were a safe haven, such as the inner west of Sydney, and particularly where I live, Newtown. I know it may be hard to believe that in an area with the cultural diversity, youthful population and higher then average levels of education that Newtown has, but I have seen it, heard it and even experienced it. I am a middle class white heterosexual male, how can I experience any form of discrimination?
Well, let me tell you. Most people I meet who are sexist are female. Most people I know who think I care whether they screw girls or boys are gay, and most people I hear going off about a certain race or creed are talking non-sense about caucasians. I am certain this is reversed in other area's of Sydney, probably in area's with a lower socio-econimic status than Newtown. But that doesn't mean it is ok, it's still sexism, racism, and homophobia. This can't be excused, can't be accepted and we have to all ensure it doesn't become ingrained in this supposedly accepting community.
Until everyone, from the builders on sites, to the lesbians at bars, from the politicians on the hill, to the homeless on the street. From the girls in pretty frocks and high heels to the boys in pretty frocks and high heels, from the skinny leg black jean wearing cool kids, to the baggy tracksuit wearing, never seen a track lads. Until we all realise that we are not any better than any body on this earth, that everyone we see is somebody's little boy, or baby sister, or loving mother, or dependable father, we will live in a intolerant society. Every single person is amazing, the fact that their particular sperm managed to beat 24,999,999 other sperm to a miniscule egg, which then somehow managed to survive 9 months in a body to be born and survive is enough to make that person amazing. Judge people on their actions after that, and judge them harshly, that is the way to make this planet a more peaceful and more enjoyable place to be. The fact I have a penis, white skin, prefer the intimate company of females to males, and have enough money to eat and live in my modest surroundings is of no more consequece to you than what shirt I wear. We all know better.
Keep an ear to the ground and a fist in the sky
